Research, Consultancy and Extension
The college has good infrastructure for research activities as is evident from the
number of projects( 80 ) successfully being executed by the faculty members and students of the
college. As many as 37 lecturers of the college have Ph.D. degree and have good number of
publications in reputed national and international journals. Some of our staff members have had
exposure to the frontiers of their discipline in reputed institutes/laboratories abroad.
Dr(Mrs) J. Sarma of the Department of Botany has successfully completed an
Orchid-Tissueculture project funded by the Department of Biotechnology. Our tissue-culture lab has
been working with considerable success on in-vitro mass multiplication and propagation of
ornamentally important orchids under a project funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
The Department of Pisciculture, under a project funded by the DBT, has established
Chinese Circular Eco-hatchery and Magur Hatchery in the college campus and has been successful in
breeding of carp ( Labeo gonius , Lobeo rohita, and Cyprinus carpio) at an altitude of 1496 metre
for the first time. This pioneering work has been hailed by Fishery experts around the country.
They have also been successful in induced breeding of Gold fish at mid altitudinal region by HCG.
Dr. J.N. Vishwakarma of our Chemistry Department has recently completed an
Indo-French project funded by the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR)
in the area of Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
The Organic Research Laboratory of the Dept. of Chemistry, which concentrates on
newer synthetic strategies, has developed a novel synthetic route for the synthesis of hitherto
unknown tetrahydropyrimidines, which are known to be potential insecticides and pesticides. The
laboratory has also been successful in developing a novel synthetic strategy for carbazoles, an
important class of bioactive molecules. These projects have been funded by the UGC and the state
council of Science, Technology and Environment.
The Dept. of Biotechnology has started working on micropropagation of Begonia rex.
A Protocol for micropropagation of begonia rex using leaf extracts has been developed.
Acclimatization of micropropagated plantlets has been successfully achieved.
The computer Science Dept. has developed a program for the college library, which
take care of recording new arrivals, lending of books and stock verification. The Dept. has also
successfully developed programs for the management of admissions, fee collection, etc. which are
being used in the college. The college routine and staff information are also managed by yet another
program developed by the Dept. The Computer Science Dept. has very recently created a program to
manage the internet access accounting saving the college over Rs. 50,000.00 in the process. The
college web site has been developed in house. The Dept. has also developed software package for
hospital administration costing over Rs. 2,50,000.00 It is being used by Nazareth Hospital, and
recently it has also been adopted by a sister organization of theirs at Khairabad, near Lucknow.
Recent Major Projects
Dr. N.C. Bharali and Shri A.L. Warjri of the Department of Business Administration,
on the request from the Directorate of the Border Area Development(Govt.of Meghalaya), undertook a
project on, "Ropeways in Meghalaya: their impact on the local economy" funded by the Government of
Meghalaya. They have successfully completed their project and submitted their findings to the
Government. This is the first time that such a study was initiated and funded by the Government of
Meghalaya.
The research group led by Dr. C.S. Rao of the Department of Botany has been granted
financial assistance of Rs.14.85 lakhs by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of
India(New Delhi) for the improvement of Infrastructural Facilities in Botanical Garden of the College
and Ex-situ Conservation of Rare/Endemic plants.
The team of the Organic Research Lab has just started working on a project involving
synthesis of Novel Tetrahydropyrimidines with potent insecticidal and pesticidal properties funded
by the World Bank through National Agricultural Technology Project-ICAR (Rs.20 lakhs). The team
includes two Senior Research Fellows.

N.B.: Apart from the above-mentioned projects, there are many minor research
projects in progress in various departments of the College funded by the UGC and State Council of
Science, Technology and Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya
Other extension services
The College has become an active hub engaged in a number of extension activities
emerging out of its academic programmes. The Pisciculture Department, apart from maintaining a
demonstration fish farm of 24 ponds, has also been instrumental in helping to set up and support a
number of fishery projects in the villages. The Botany and Biotechnology Departments have several
state-of-the-art tissue-culture research projects from the Department of Biotechnology (Government
of India) related to the conservation and multiplication of orchids. The Life Science Departments
have been advocating, with some measure of success, rabbit rearing in rural areas. The layout, the
greenery, the trees and the lawns of the College campus instill in every Anthonian a feeling for
nature and the environment. The Computer Science Department was the first to introduce computer
education at the College level in the Northeast. It stills play a pioneering role in promoting
computer-based employment generating ventures in collaboration with the Ministry of Information
Technology (Government of India).
