The Department of Geology was established on the 13th June 1985. This is a full time B.Sc course with Honours in Geology and affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). It is a professional under-graduate course that is primarily aimed at preparing students for Post-Graduation programs. Its principal objective is to provide the students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation to enable them to pursue higher studies and which ultimately helps students in securing careers in the diverse field of Earth sciences with employment opportunities in geological survey institutes, oil and gas industries, engineering projects, mining sector, scientific research and academic career in Earth Sciences.

The College offers Geology as an Honours Subject for B. Sc. students with Physics/Chemistry and Mathematics as subsidiary/elective subjects. It is a professional under-graduate course that prepares our graduates for higher education in Geology/Earth Sciences for employment as a Geologist in various sectors both in government on non-government organisations such as Geological survey of India, Oil & Gas companies, and Mining and Engineering sectors under PSUs and private companies. The course attempts to impart to students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation to enable them to pursue a post-graduate academic career in Earth Sciences (M.Sc. n Geology or M.Tech. in Applied Geology, Mining and other various fields) in recognized Universities across the country and abroad. It has a huge scope in research and development sectors too.
