The department of philosophy was established in the year 1938. The department offers Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). The department consists of 3 different shifts (morning, afternoon and evening shifts) each shifts offering major and honours. Philosophy is one of the oldest disciplines and has its roots both in ancient Indian culture and Western tradition. The philosophy department provides a safe space to explore the ideas from many traditions which address the meaning of life at personal and intersubjective sphere. Philosophy as a discipline plays an important role in ideating ethical principles for the society, building foundations for religious commitments, and transformative in developing personality and self-identity of individuals. Philosophers in today’s world are often seen as arbiter and more generally as a cultural arbiter in social situations approaching the problems faced by man and society from multiple dimensions. We offer wide range of courses from Indian Philosophical Knowledge Systems to Greek Intellectual thoughts to Logic (both formal and mathematical) to Contemporary Studies such as issues in Artificial Intelligence, Environmental Ethics, Problems in Sciences. The department also offers some relevant courses on cultures in general and specifically on tribal belief and knowledge system from a philosophical point of view. The curriculum and teaching methods are designed to develop and enable students to face up with the current social needs both materially and socially keeping in mind their holistic development. Having completed the course, the students are expected to develop a critical thinking ability widely distinguishable from ordinary people, to become competent individuals to tackle societal and individual circumstances rationally. It is a widely opted subject for students keen on Civil service examination because of its ability to infuse students with an extravagant reasoning ability and knowledge from multiple disciplines with which philosophy engages. A student of philosophy can have a successful career in teaching, a lifelong researcher, administrator, a life coach, philosophical counsellor and with additional qualification can become better professionals such as lawyers or theologians.
