The Department of Geology, St. Anthony's College, Shillong, organized a 1-day Meet
Academic Guidance Expert Programme for Undergraduate BSc Geology Major students. The
academic expert Prof. P. Phukon , Department of Geological Sciences, Gauhati University,
delivered lectures on "The Landscape, Geology and Mineral Resources of Meghalaya" and
"Overview of the FYUP as per NEP 2020: Opportunities and Challenges," held in the
Conference Hall of St. Anthony's College, Shillong, on 4th September, 2024.
During the first half of the programme, Prof. Phukon provided detailed information on
Meghalaya Plateau unique geological landscape, tectonic evolution and its relationship to
mineral exploration. Causes for the highest rainfall in the world linked to the upliftment of
Shillong Plateau and the region role in monsoon variability research was emphasised.
Prof. Phukon gave a comprehensive coverage on the opportunities and challenges of
implementing Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) under National Education Policy
(NEP) 2020. He expounded on the importance and benefits of Apprenticeship Training
Scheme available with the National Apprenticeship Portal and Infosys Springboard.
The event concluded with an interactive session that provided students with a more
profound comprehension and valuable insights into the subject matter, which will be
advantageous to their academic performance. The program was well-received by both
faculty and students, who appreciated the resource person's practical insights into the education system.
