The Department of Mass Media was established on 14th September 1995 and is credited pioneering the introduction of media curriculum at the graduation level. The undergraduate course in Mass Communication and Video Production was the first of its kind in the country and have a national recognition for excellence and technical facility. It was in recognition to this pioneering effort of the college that the UGC sanctioned a second professional graduate course in Media Technologies in 2001.
The Department offers two separate graduate programmes in media:
These two courses enable students to find their place among a burgeoning class of media professionals, not merely as multiskilled technicians, but as individuals with a sound theoretical understanding of the larger social context within which the media industry functions. Both the courses challenge to develop a critical perspective and empower the students to voice and express it through the several facets of new media technology.
The courses have a well-balanced mix of theoretical concepts and practical and experiential learning. The Department has well equipped labs and audio, video, photography studio facilities. The Department emphasises on hands on training encourages handling equipment and first-hand exposure and working with different software. All these approaches enable students to gain the innate nuances of the media field experiences while still studying in the department.
The Department has well experienced faculties both academically as well as professional field expertise in media. Each faculty member specialises in the different core aspects of the media.
The admission to both the programmes is usually conducted through an entrance exam. The Department also conducts personal interview if deemed necessary.
